He starred in a sitcom called Kevin Can Wait between 2016–2018 (it was canceled after two seasons). James is married to actress Steffiana de la Cruz and they have 4 kids together.

Julianna Margulies wanted to wear a wig for her role in The Good Wife, so that people won’t think that she looks the same as she did when she appeared on ER. Margulies also revealed that she wears a $10,000 wig when playing the stylish Alicia Florrick since her own hair is very curly and the production wanted her to have straight hair. It only takes her 10 minutes to put that wig on so there are also no continuity issues. The actress was worried that the 22 episodes a year, 14 hours a day would ruin her hair, so wigs were an excellent solution to the matter.
