There was a time; J.K Simmons was getting only small roles in the movie industry even though he had dreams of becoming a big-shot actor. The limitation changed when he won an Oscar for Best Supporting Actor for his electric role in the blockbuster movie ‘Whiplash’ which was released in 2015.
Simmons’ childhood was filled with memories of sweet music playing in their family home in Grosse Pointe Woods. His father was a music director and educator who taught kids at Parcells Middle School, while his mother was a volunteer and a housewife. She sang with the Chamber Singers and helped in organizing community events.
In 1973, his family relocated to Missoula after his father got a job at the University of Montana. Simmons also attended the same university and graduated with a degree in music alongside his siblings. The death of his parents was a heavy blow to him even though he was 59 years old when they died. He loved them and they were his role models, making it difficult to close the gap.
The year he won the Oscar he gave a moving acceptance speech in which he urged everyone to call their parents. The action brought many distanced families together after many picked up the phone to call each other.
